Why do I have one sore spot in my back?
One sore spot in your back is usually a small patch of tight muscle rather than anything structural. A single area gets overworked or held in tension, knots up, and keeps aching while the rest of your back feels fine. It often eases with movement, and hands-on care can help it relax.
One tight spot can unsettle the whole back.
What is that one sore spot?
In the image, almost every dot sits neatly in place, and one dot has drifted out of line. That single dot is the sore spot. A small area of muscle in your back has tightened into a knot, often from being held in one position or working harder than the muscle around it, and it stays switched on while everything else is fine. As it settles, the dot slips back into the grid, and the back feels even again. Nothing is being clicked or put back into place here. It simply stands for that one tight patch letting go, so it stops pulling at your attention. Most people feel it as a dull, nagging ache in one place, sometimes with a tender knot you can press on.
Why does one spot tighten up like that?
Muscles work in teams, and when one part takes more than its share, it tires and tightens while the others carry on. A desk setup that favours one side, a bag always on the same shoulder, or a movement you repeat at work can all load one area more than the rest. Stress keeps that spot switched on, and once it is sore you tend to guard it, which keeps it tight. Gentle movement usually helps more than rest. At Back In Sync, we find the spot that is doing the complaining, work on easing it, and look at what is loading it in the first place so it is less likely to return.
When should I get it looked at?
A single tight spot that eases with movement is rarely anything to worry about. See your GP or us sooner if the pain is sharp or spreading rather than a dull ache, if it travels down an arm or leg with numbness or weakness, if it follows a fall or an accident, or if it comes with fever, unexplained weight loss, or a spot that is swollen and hot. These are less common, but worth checking rather than pushing through.
